A jumper folded once takes a 100mm gusset comfortably; two or three items need 120mm or more. Get that wrong and the bag bulges, the handles splay and the whole thing reads cheap however good the print is.
Ribbon handles are the usual choice here because they sit flat against a coat sleeve and photograph well. Rope is the sturdier option for heavier knitwear and coats.
